Sony has dropped a bombshell in the world of video games that will undoubtedly make PS Vita nostalgics raise an eyebrow. The Japanese firm is once again entering the field of portable devices, albeit with an interesting twist. They present the PlayStation Portal, a device that will allow you to enjoy your PS5 games directly in your hands, as long as you are connected to the network. Its price: 219 euros or 200 dollars.

A few months ago, Sony gave us a glimpse of its «Project Q», a mysterious device that seemed to be the result of merging a screen with a DualSense controller. Thanks to the PS5’s Remote Play feature, which allows you to stream games to other devices, this new gadget promised to bring the PS5 experience anywhere, as long as your PS5 was plugged in and turned on. Now, that project has taken shape and an official name: PlayStation Portal.

What does the PlayStation Portal offer us?

This device not only promises to be a window to your favorite games, but also to incorporates all the features of the DualSense controller. The new system features everything from adaptive triggers to haptic vibration. In addition, for audio purists, it includes a 3.5mm jack and promises a crystal-clear display with its 8-inch LCD screen, offering 1080p at 60 fps.

However, it is crucial to understand that the PlayStation Portal is not an ordinary handheld console, like the Nintendo Switch or Valve’s Steam Deck. It does not run games by itself; acts more like a mirror of your PS5, requiring an Internet connection for both the device and the console. Sony recommends a minimum speed of 5 Mbps, although 15 Mbps would be ideal.

As for the internal specifications of the PlayStation Portal, Sony has decided to keep quiet, without revealing details about its internal hardware.

PlayStation Portal Accessories

Along with this announcement, Sony has also introduced new audio accessories. We have the headphones Pulse Explore and the supra-aural Pulse Elite, priced at $200/€219.99 and $150/€149.99, respectively. If you’re thinking of using the PlayStation Portal wirelessly, these headphones will be essential, as they the device will not feature Bluetooth, opting instead for Sony’s own wireless audio technology.

The launch is officially scheduled for 2023, although we will have to wait until Sony gives a fixed date to reserve it and have PlayStation Portal in our hands. Sony, once again, promises to revolutionize the way we play.
